  • Check out the latest FNA news on our new blog

  • Thanks to all of you who have renewed your FNA memberships!  If you haven’t yet renewed, or you would like to change your level, visit the Membership page, or simply contact us by email.

  • We’d like to introduce two new Board members, Rachel Bridger and Vincent Olivares, both elected at the February general membership meeting.  Rachel is a Fermilab employee who has spent many long hours working in the field on various aspects of the natural areas here, and Vincent is a butterfly specialist at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago.

Also, Ryan Campbell, who recently received his Master’s degree from Southern Illinois University has been hired as a consultant for restoration ecology at Fermilab.  Ryan also has a history of years of work at Fermilab.  Finally, FNA is proud to announce the 2009 Robert Betz Summer Internship recipient, Courtney Gill.  Courtney is a graduate student at Northwestern University and will be here this summer, working on various aspects of natural area restoration for FNA.

  • Now available through Fermilab Natural Areas!!  Environmentally friendly rain barrels. These barrels are 55 gallon food-grade plastic barrels and come in a variety of colors, including blue, black, silver, or terra cotta (shown).  They stand roughly 48 inches high, and they are sealed to keep them safe around children and animals.  The screw-off lid is equipped with a screen to keep debris and insects from the water.  A valve on the bottom of the barrels to which a hose is attached makes the captured rainwater available through a simple gravity system. A connector installed at the bottom can be used with a hose to connect to a second barrel, doubling the capacity of your system.  An overflow connector at the top of the barrels allows for a hose to be attached and directed to other landscaped areas.

The barrels are $85, and are ready to install, with the valve already installed.  Wood stands to elevate your barrel are available for $20.  Barrels and stands will be ordered and be available for you to pick up at Fermilab.

  • Fermilab received a nice write-up in the Fall 2008 issue of Chicago Wilderness.

  • FNA, which is currently a part of Fermi Research Alliance, is actively pursuing our own status as a not-for-profit corporation under the laws of Illinois and the Internal Revenue Service.  While contributions to FNA are tax-deductible, we will soon be an independent corporation.  We recently became a legal not-for-profit corporation in Illinois, and we are actively working on the paperwork to submit to IRS to obtain our legal, “tax deductible” status.  We expect to have this soon.

  • Fermilab Natural Areas has T-shirts!  Order yours by calling Jeanette Olah at 630-840-3303.  Short-sleeved shirts are just $15 and long-sleeves are $18. Both sport the FNA logo on the front, and our website on the back.
